“I Personally think we should teach at least one lesson from the Song of Solomon.”

Quote of the week explanation

This is a comment that one of our members made during Sunday school yesterday. I just thought it was amusing because Joseph Smith literally said that the Song of Solomon was (and still is) “not inspired scripture.” In my eyes, that statement by a prophet of the Lord is enough to shut down any argument in favor of the Song of Solomon being used as reference for teaching and speaking in the church, but everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

As the great George Washington once said: tsup.

We have in front of us, folks, what we call a mystery. It is truly an enigma that we are now facing. This question—this matter with which our minds have toiled restlessly—is the strikingly simple query of "why was two-dollar bill ever conceived?" Why? It's like... Having a coin worth two cents or a bill worth six dollars. There is no logical reason for its existence.

Anyway, now that we've got that matter settled…

How are you?

We've had an interesting week, to say the least. We met with Iris on Monday. It was a really good lesson. We read from the Book of Mormon with her and led a discussion about the importance of faith and all that stuff. She believes in the entire message, and she believes the Book of Mormon to be true, and by extension believes the entire message of the restoration. We are very excited about her progress, the only problem is... She's going to New York for the next two weeks. Doh! We are not entirely sure when she is leaving, so we'll see if we can squeeze one more meeting in before she departs. If not, though... We'll try to keep contact while she is away.

We also had a lesson with Joan on Monday. We taught her the plan of salvation, and our ward mission leader came along, which was good. She is always super busy, between work and school, so we weren't able to meet with her any more than that, but we have a lesson scheduled for later this evening, and we'll see how it goes. We will be teaching her the ever-elusive word of wisdom, and we'll see where to go from there.

And then... There's Anthony. Good old Anthony. We had a lesson with him scheduled for our usual time on Saturday. About ten minutes before the lesson was to take place, he gave us a call and told us that he was "not in the mood" to meet with us. Fortunately, we were able to sweet-talk him over the phone and he allowed us to come over for a slightly shorter visit than usual. So when we taught him it was mostly a discussion centered on the Book of Mormon and introduced him briefly to the Plan of Salvation, which is what we had originally planned to teach. The conversation went well, and Anthony said the closing prayer, which is something that he'd been reluctant to do in the past. Anthony seems to really like us. He is always very happy to talk with us, both in person and over the phone, so I'm not entirely certain why he's been hesitant to want to meet with us for the last few weeks. He always allows us to come over in the end, though, so I suppose it's not the most catastrophic thing.

We had some other lessons too, but those three are the main ones.

We did have an exchange this week, with our zone leaders. They are Spanish missionaries, and I had the privilege of going to their area. We did many things that day (such as taking their car into the shop and finding out that it would be in there for several days), but the highlight was going to visit someone who they are teaching. We knocked on her door, and they had a brief conversation in Spanish, in which, from what I gathered, the woman said that she was busy doing something, and my Zone leader asked if she needed help. She thought about it for a moment, before letting us in and letting us help her... Make tamales! We washed our hands, rolled up our sleeves (so to speak) and got to work. It was quite the experience.

And, that was the week. Pretty dang exciting, eh? We are, as usual, looking forward to a bright future. Until such time as in occurs, however... Adieu

P.S. It's interesting to note that the writings of the Jaredites, namely those which are noted in the Book of Mormon as not being contained in that final work, are older than the writings of Moses which we now know as the Book of Genesis..

P.P.S. Did you know that... Just kidding. I can't think of any fun facts.

P.P.P.S. Pomp and circumstance
